India Moves Closer to Developing Its First Indigenous Fighter Jet Engine

India is steadily moving towards one of its most ambitious defence achievements—the development of its first indigenous fighter jet engine. The project is expected to significantly reduce the country's dependence on imported propulsion systems and strengthen its long-term military capabilities. If successful, India will join a select group of nations capable of independently designing and manufacturing advanced fighter aircraft engines, a technology regarded as one of the most complex in aerospace engineering.


The initiative is part of India's broader push to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, which aims to build indigenous capabilities across military aviation, missiles, naval platforms, drones, and advanced defence technologies.

A Long Journey Towards Indigenous Capability

While India has successfully developed combat aircraft such as the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, it has continued to rely on foreign-made engines. To address this strategic gap, the government has accelerated efforts to develop a next-generation fighter engine capable of producing around 120 kilonewtons (kN) of thrust, making it suitable for future combat aircraft.


The programme is being led by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The new engine builds upon decades of research, including the experience gained from the Kaveri engine programme, which helped Indian scientists develop expertise in critical propulsion technologies despite not entering operational service.


Partnership with France's Safran

To accelerate development, India is working towards a strategic partnership with French aerospace company Safran Aircraft Engines. The collaboration is expected to focus on jointly developing the engine while enabling technology transfer in key areas such as turbine blade manufacturing, advanced materials, combustion systems, and digital engine controls.


This partnership is intended to strengthen India's domestic capabilities while reducing the time required to develop a world-class fighter engine.


Powering the AMCA

The indigenous engine is expected to power India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), the country's fifth-generation stealth fighter currently under development. The AMCA will feature advanced stealth technology, sensor fusion, electronic warfare systems, and next-generation avionics.


The aircraft is expected to initially fly with imported engines before transitioning to the indigenous engine once development and certification are completed. This will provide India with greater flexibility in future upgrades and reduce dependence on overseas suppliers.


Strengthening India's Aerospace Ecosystem

Developing an indigenous fighter engine will not only enhance national security but also strengthen India's aerospace industry. The programme is expected to boost research in advanced materials, precision manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and aerospace engineering while creating new opportunities for Indian industries and skilled professionals.


An indigenous engine will also improve supply-chain security, reduce long-term maintenance costs, and provide greater operational independence for the Indian Air Force.


Challenges Ahead

Despite the significant progress, developing a modern fighter jet engine remains a highly demanding task. Extensive testing, certification, and refinement will be required before the engine becomes operational. Continued collaboration between research institutions, industry, and international partners will play a crucial role in ensuring the programme's success.
