India-Morocco Defence Ties Deepen with Inauguration of WhAP 8×8 Manufacturing Facility

In a landmark move for India-Africa defence cooperation, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Moroccan counterpart Abdelatif Loudyi inaugurated a state-of-the-art defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, Morocco. Established by Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), this plant represents India’s first defence manufacturing venture in Africa and is now Morocco’s largest such facility. Strategic Importance of the Berrechid Plant

Spanning over 20,000 square metres, the Berrechid facility will manufacture the Wheeled Armoured Platform 8×8 (WhAP 8×8), a versatile combat vehicle developed in collaboration with India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Production at the plant has already commenced, three months ahead of schedule, with initial deliveries expected next month.

For India, this facility is a major extension of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative, projecting the nation’s technological and manufacturing capabilities on a global stage. Minister Singh highlighted that the plant exemplifies India’s “Make with Friends” and “Make for the World” vision, showcasing India’s ability to deliver cutting-edge defence technology in partnership with strategic allies.

Boosting Morocco’s Defence Industry

For Morocco, the plant represents a strategic step in enhancing its domestic defence capabilities. By sourcing 35% of components locally, with plans to increase this to 50%, the initiative will create significant employment opportunities and strengthen the local ecosystem of engineers, technicians, and suppliers. The facility not only equips the Royal Moroccan Army but also positions Morocco as a potential exporter of advanced defence equipment to other African nations, aligning with the country’s broader industrial and security objectives.

Regional and Global Impact

The Berrechid plant is expected to serve as a hub for export-friendly countries, particularly across Africa, according to TASL CEO Sukaran Singh. Beyond the economic benefits, the collaboration strengthens bilateral relations, fosters technological exchange, and contributes to regional security by enabling both countries to share expertise in defence manufacturing.

The MGMM Outlook

The inauguration of the WhAP 8×8 defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, Morocco, marks a significant stride in India-Morocco strategic relations. This milestone reflects India’s commitment to global industrial cooperation and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, showcasing its ability to export advanced defence technology while fostering international partnerships. The facility, developed by Tata Advanced Systems in collaboration with DRDO, not only represents India’s technological capabilities but also strengthens Morocco’s domestic defence sector, creating jobs and building local expertise in high-tech manufacturing. Such initiatives highlight the power of collaborative growth, where nations can share knowledge, enhance security, and jointly contribute to regional stability.

From Morocco’s perspective, the plant is transformative, enabling the country to modernize its military equipment and potentially become a defence exporter within Africa. By sourcing a significant portion of components locally and aiming to increase domestic participation, Morocco strengthens its industrial ecosystem and encourages skill development among engineers and technicians. Beyond economics, this partnership exemplifies how strategic collaboration can elevate regional security, support technological self-reliance, and position both nations as proactive contributors to global defence innovation. The Berrechid facility thus stands as a model of international cooperation that aligns with India’s vision of “Make with Friends” while empowering Morocco’s defence ambitions.
