Operation Amistad, a name that translates to “friendship” in Spanish, was activated swiftly following the earthquakes that struck Venezuela. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the mission, stating that the aircraft took off with critical aid to support post-disaster relief efforts. The operation includes a dedicated Indian Army medical contingent and essential supplies designed to address immediate medical and humanitarian needs on the ground.

Scale of the Venezuelan Tragedy

On June 24, 2026, two powerful earthquakes measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck in quick succession near Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira. The tremors caused widespread structural damage, with numerous buildings collapsing and critical infrastructure affected across the region.

Venezuelan authorities have reported at least 235 confirmed deaths, with over 4,300 people injured and thousands still missing.
