India Condemns Pakistan’s Airstrikes on Afghanistan as a Direct Threat to Regional Peace and Stability

India has voiced strong opposition to Pakistan’s recent military actions in Afghan territory. The Ministry of External Affairs described the airstrikes and ground operations as a blatant violation of sovereignty that endangers broader peace in the region.

In a formal statement issued on June 29, the MEA highlighted the heavy civilian toll, including deaths and injuries among women and children. Officials stressed that such actions undermine Afghanistan’s territorial integrity and reflect a troubling pattern of behavior that destabilizes the neighborhood. India extended heartfelt condolences to the affected families in Afghanistan, wished for the speedy recovery of the injured, and reiterated its firm commitment to supporting a sovereign and stable Afghanistan.

India’s Firm Stance on Sovereignty

The Indian government quickly and unequivocally condemned the Pakistani strikes. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the attacks represent Pakistan’s persistent pattern of reckless conduct and an effort to shift attention from its own internal challenges through cross-border aggression.

This response aligns with India’s long-standing position of respecting international norms and prioritizing regional stability. By standing firmly with Afghanistan’s right to sovereignty, India has once again underscored its role as a responsible voice advocating for peace and adherence to global principles in South and Central Asia.

The Strikes and Their Devastating Impact

Pakistani forces carried out airstrikes and ground operations late on June 28 and into June 29 across the Afghan provinces of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar. According to Afghan officials, these actions struck residential areas and resulted in at least 36 civilian deaths along with 163 injuries. Reports described harrowing scenes, including secondary strikes on rescuers in Chamkani district of Paktia province, where an initial attack killed an elderly man and a child before follow-up strikes claimed more lives.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) independently confirmed at least 28 civilian fatalities and 49 injuries, many involving women and children. Afghan authorities, including Taliban representatives, strongly protested the operations, labeling them as cowardly and brutal acts that targeted civilian homes rather than legitimate military objectives.

Pakistan’s Justification and the Karachi Trigger

Pakistan confirmed the military operation and justified it as a necessary response to recent terrorist threats originating from across the border. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that security forces conducted intelligence-based actions against militant hideouts.

The strikes followed a significant terrorist attack on June 28 against a Sindh Rangers compound in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar area. Militants from Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter group linked to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), breached the facility using a vehicle-borne explosive and engaged in gunfire, resulting in the deaths of three Rangers personnel and three attackers. This incident marked a notable escalation in militant activity within Pakistan’s major commercial hub.

Broader Regional Implications

The latest confrontation adds to a series of cross-border tensions that have persisted throughout 2026. Earlier incidents have already drawn international attention, with concerns raised about civilian casualties and the cycle of violence affecting both nations. India has consistently called for restraint, respect for sovereignty, and constructive dialogue to address shared security challenges without resorting to actions that harm innocent civilians.

Such developments highlight the urgent need for all regional players to prioritize de-escalation and cooperation. Stability in Afghanistan remains vital not only for its people but also for lasting peace across South Asia and beyond.

The MGMM Outlook

India’s strong response reinforces the importance of respecting national sovereignty and protecting civilian lives during regional conflicts. By condemning cross-border military actions that reportedly caused significant civilian casualties, India has reaffirmed its consistent position that security concerns must be addressed within the framework of international law rather than through operations that risk escalating instability. This approach reflects India's broader commitment to promoting peace, stability, and responsible engagement across South and Central Asia.

The developments also underscore the fragile security environment in the region, where retaliatory actions and militant violence continue to fuel instability. Sustainable peace will require greater restraint, meaningful dialogue, and coordinated efforts to address terrorism without compromising civilian safety or the territorial integrity of neighboring states. A stable Afghanistan remains essential for regional security, economic connectivity, and long-term prosperity, making diplomatic engagement more critical than ever.
