India Condemns Pakistan’s Airstrikes on Afghanistan as a Direct Threat to Regional Peace and Stability

India has voiced strong opposition to Pakistan’s recent military actions in Afghan territory. The Ministry of External Affairs described the airstrikes and ground operations as a blatant violation of sovereignty that endangers broader peace in the region.

In a formal statement issued on June 29, the MEA highlighted the heavy civilian toll, including deaths and injuries among women and children. Officials stressed that such actions undermine Afghanistan’s territorial integrity and reflect a troubling pattern of behavior that destabilizes the neighborhood. India extended heartfelt condolences to the affected families in Afghanistan, wished for the speedy recovery of the injured, and reiterated its firm commitment to supporting a sovereign and stable Afghanistan.

The Indian government quickly and unequivocally condemned the Pakistani strikes. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the attacks represent Pakistan’s persistent pattern of reckless conduct and an effort to shift attention from its own internal challenges through cross-border aggression.

Reports described harrowing scenes, including secondary strikes on rescuers in Chamkani district of Paktia province, where an initial attack killed an elderly man and a child before follow-up strikes claimed more lives.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) independently confirmed at least 28 civilian fatalities and 49 injuries, many involving women and children. Afghan authorities, including Taliban representatives, strongly protested the operations, labeling them as cowardly and brutal acts that targeted civilian homes rather than legitimate military objectives.

Pakistan’s Justification and the Karachi Trigger

Pakistan confirmed the military operation and justified it as a necessary response to recent terrorist threats originating from across the border. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that security forces conducted intelligence-based actions against militant hideouts.

The strikes followed a significant terrorist attack on June 28 against a Sindh Rangers compound in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar area. Militants from Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter group linked to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), breached the facility using a vehicle-borne explosive and engaged in gunfire, resulting in the deaths of three Rangers personnel and three attackers. This incident marked a notable escalation in militant activity within Pakistan’s major commercial hub.
