Exercise ‘Aakraman’: Indian Air Force Conducts High-Intensity Drills Led by Rafale Fighters

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Thursday carried out a massive wargame, Exercise ‘Aakraman’, in the central sector, focusing on boosting offensive capabilities across both mountainous and ground-based terrains. Covering a vast area, the exercise featured the IAF’s frontline fighter fleets, led by the formidable Rafale combat jets.

According to defence sources, the ongoing drill includes long-range strike missions, simulated attacks on enemy installations, and electronic warfare operations. Aircraft and equipment have been mobilized from multiple airbases, including those in the eastern region, to support the training. The name ‘Aakraman’—meaning ‘attack’ in Hindi—highlights the proactive, strike-oriented nature of the operation.

The primary aim is to provide pilots with combat-realistic training scenarios, simulating high-intensity conflict situations. The Rafales, along with other key assets like the Su-30 MKIs, are executing precision bombing runs and extended-range sorties to hone deep-strike capabilities.

Top IAF pilots, including elite “Top Guns”, are at the helm of this exercise, carrying out high-risk, complex missions under the watchful eye of senior Air Force leadership. This includes advanced ground attack drills, strategic maneuvers, and the use of high-tech weapon systems.

The IAF’s cutting-edge arsenal, such as Meteor air-to-air missiles and long-range precision munitions like Rampage and Rocks, enhances its tactical edge. These capabilities are critical in countering evolving threats, particularly amid rising cross-border tensions.

Currently, India operates two Rafale squadrons—one based at Ambala in Punjab and the other at Hashimara in West Bengal—ensuring rapid deployment across key regions. The timing of Exercise Aakraman aligns with escalated tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack, further underscoring the need for constant combat readiness. (From India Today)

Pakistan’s Response and Regional Dynamics

Meanwhile, Pakistan has issued a notice for a surface-to-surface missile test off the Karachi coast, following firing drills at the Tilla Range. Experts view these actions as posturing in response to regional developments. Although Pakistan denies involvement in the Pahalgam attack, international pressure on Islamabad continues to grow.

Conclusion

Exercise Aakraman stands as a powerful demonstration of the Indian Air Force’s evolving capabilities, technological strength, and strategic preparedness. As geopolitical tensions simmer, such drills serve not only as training exercises but as strong deterrents, showcasing India’s ability to respond swiftly and decisively to any threat. With advanced aircraft, elite pilots, and a robust defence infrastructure, the IAF continues to reinforce its dominance in the skies.
