DPIIT and Pfizer Join Hands to Strengthen India’s Healthcare Innovation Ecosystem

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), operating under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pfizer Limited to accelerate India’s healthcare innovation landscape. This strategic alliance, announced in New Delhi, underscores the government’s vision of transforming India into a global hub for MedTech innovation by empowering startups with financial aid, mentorship, and global exposure.

Pfizer INDovation: Driving Lab-to-Market Solutions

At the heart of this partnership lies the Pfizer INDovation Program, a platform dedicated to supporting MedTech startups in their journey from laboratory research to market-ready solutions. Under the initiative, DPIIT-recognized startups will be eligible for grants of up to ₹60 lakh each, along with an intensive eighteen-month incubation program managed by Social Alpha.

The incubation program is designed to address critical phases of healthcare innovation, including clinical validation, regulatory approvals, and go-to-market strategies. Startups will also gain access to Pfizer’s research and development ecosystem in Chennai, as well as global networks, mentorship opportunities, and world-class infrastructure—giving them the tools to compete on an international scale.

Empowering Startups Across Health Sectors

The collaboration is set to benefit fourteen innovative MedTech startups working across diverse domains. These include solutions for diagnostics, screening, health monitoring, and therapeutic technologies. Special focus areas also extend to non-communicable diseases, oncology, brain health, maternal and child health, and immunisation. By focusing on such wide-ranging challenges, the program is designed to deliver impact not only in India but also in global healthcare markets.

Leadership Perspectives

Senior officials from both DPIIT and Pfizer highlighted the significance of this collaboration. Shri Sanjiv, Joint Secretary at DPIIT, noted that India must encourage breakthrough drug discovery and healthcare solutions, with startups playing a crucial role in this transformation. Sharad Goswami, Senior Director – Global Policy and Public Affairs at Pfizer India, emphasized Pfizer’s commitment to fostering patient-centric innovations that respond to the unique healthcare needs of Indian society.

A Broader Push for Public-Private Partnerships

This initiative is part of DPIIT’s broader effort to strengthen public–private partnerships in the healthcare sector. In August 2025, DPIIT partnered with Roche India to offer Indian startups support in navigating regulatory pathways, intellectual property, and validation studies, particularly in fields such as oncology, neurology, ophthalmology, and rare diseases. These consecutive collaborations reflect the government’s intent to build a strong innovation pipeline that will boost India’s global presence in medical research and healthcare technologies.
