Bodhan AI: Powering India’s Next Educational Revolution Through Artificial Intelligence

In a landmark move aimed at transforming the country’s education ecosystem, Dharmendra Pradhan launched the Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Education Bodhan AI during the Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026 in New Delhi. The initiative represents a decisive step toward building a sovereign, scalable, and ethically governed AI infrastructure tailored specifically for India’s educational needs.


Hosted at IIT Madras, Bodhan AI is envisioned as the foundation of the ambitious Bharat EduAI Stack, a national digital public infrastructure designed to integrate artificial intelligence across school education, higher education, research, and skill development.

Building the Bharat EduAI Stack: A Sovereign Digital Framework

At the heart of the initiative lies the Bharat EduAI Stack, an interoperable AI-powered ecosystem that will enable educational institutions, state governments, startups, and policymakers to build and deploy AI tools seamlessly.


Unlike fragmented digital systems developed independently by states or private players, the Bharat EduAI Stack aims to provide a unified technology layer built on Indian AI models and hosted domestically. This approach ensures data sovereignty, security, and compliance with India’s regulatory frameworks.


The stack will support multilingual AI capabilities, personalised learning pathways, intelligent assessment systems, predictive analytics for student performance, and AI-driven administrative tools. By embedding artificial intelligence into the foundational layers of education governance, the government seeks to make learning more adaptive, inclusive, and outcome-oriented.


Government Investment and Strategic Policy Alignment

The launch of Bodhan AI aligns closely with the broader goals of the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises technology integration, digital infrastructure, and personalised learning models.


In the Union Budget 2025–26, the government allocated ₹500 crore for establishing a Centre of Excellence in AI for education. An additional ₹100 crore has been earmarked for the 2026–27 financial year to support expansion, pilot programmes, and ecosystem development. This sustained financial backing signals long-term policy commitment rather than a short-term technology experiment.


According to officials, Bodhan AI has been structured as a not-for-profit Section 8 entity to ensure institutional stability and public accountability. While initial funding comes from the central government, future sustainability will involve state collaborations, CSR contributions, and partnerships with edtech startups.


Pilots, Partnerships and Institutional Collaboration

The rollout strategy includes pilot deployments in selected states within the next six to twelve months. These pilots will cover a percentage of schools in participating states to test AI-powered tools in real classroom environments. The results will guide improvements before nationwide scaling.


More than 100 edtech startups participated in the Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave, showcasing solutions ranging from adaptive testing platforms to AI-based tutoring systems. The vision is to allow these innovators to build on top of the Bharat EduAI Stack rather than create isolated systems.


The conclave also witnessed academic collaborations between Indian institutions and global universities. Programmes focused on AI in management, technology, and interdisciplinary education were announced to ensure that the talent pipeline grows alongside infrastructure.


Teacher Empowerment and Capacity Building

A key focus of Bodhan AI is not just student-facing tools but also teacher empowerment. AI-based capacity-building modules are being developed to help educators integrate intelligent systems into pedagogy effectively. From automated feedback mechanisms to lesson planning assistance and performance analytics, teachers are expected to benefit from tools that reduce administrative burdens and enhance classroom impact.


By integrating AI training into teacher education programmes, the government aims to ensure that technology adoption remains practical, ethical, and grounded in real educational needs.


Ethical AI and Data Protection Safeguards

One of the central themes emphasised during the launch was responsible AI usage. The Bharat EduAI Stack is designed with built-in safeguards to protect student data, ensure transparency in algorithmic decisions, and prevent misuse of information.


The emphasis on sovereign AI models also reduces dependence on foreign AI infrastructure, positioning India as both a consumer and creator of educational AI technology. Multilingual AI capabilities will ensure accessibility across India’s diverse linguistic landscape, helping bridge urban-rural and regional divides.


A Transformational Step for India’s Education System

Bodhan AI represents more than a technology upgrade; it signals a structural transformation in how education is delivered, monitored, and improved in India. By combining public digital infrastructure with AI innovation, the initiative aims to create a future-ready education system capable of supporting over 250 million learners across the country.


If implemented effectively, the Bharat EduAI Stack could serve as a global model for integrating artificial intelligence into public education at scale. As pilots begin and partnerships deepen, the coming years will determine how successfully India can translate this ambitious vision into measurable improvements in learning outcomes.
